By this time, it was later in the afternoon. Not time for the sun to go down, but getting there. August was staying at a motel on the mainland. Krysteen invited him to stay in her spare bedroom. Maud didn’t think that was a good idea and tried to give Krysteen some subtle hint, like kicking her in the shin, but, as usual, Krysteen didn’t pay any attention. Fortunately, August said he’d stay at his motel.

“How are you planning on finding out about this paternity document?” Maud asked.

“Not sure, Maud,” August said. “Before you guys came, I had searched the house pretty well.”

“You were here before us?” Maud asked.

“Hiding in the butler’s pantry,” August said, smiling. “I thought you might be the other heirs or connected to them.”

Or, perhaps, the cops, Maud thought. Then, “But you’re sure this document exists?”

August rubbed his face in his hands and was silent for a second. “I’m not sure it still exists. I am, however, sure it existed at one time. My grandmother told my mother about it. It wasn’t just one of those family myths, either. You know, being related to rich people and all that. My grandmother and mother were very smart and very precise people. They were no-nonsense women. I think you ladies would have liked them, and I’m sure they would have liked you. So, the short answer is no. But my great-grandfather wanted my side of the family to have an inheritance. He was already married when we met my great-grandmother, and he couldn’t marry her. But they loved each other. I’ve got letters from him to her saying how cruel things were that he couldn’t get a divorce and marry her.”

August looked sad and distraught after he said this.

Maud looked at her iPhone. It was four-thirty, time to go. They hadn’t gotten caught so far, and she felt like it would tempt fate to stay any longer. She was going to suggest to Krysteen they go, but then Krysteen stood up. “August, what I’m about to suggest is a little off the wall.”

Oh, my God! Maud thought! Here we go!

“I’m a local attorney, and you may or may not know this, but Maud and I have solved quite a few local murders…”

Was she taking credit for everything?

“And now I have a podcast that focuses on these local murders. We had our inaugural show last night, and it was quite a good start!” Krysteen took a breath. August looked slightly confused, but he politely listened. “I was wondering if you could come by our studio and let me interview you about all of this for the podcast tonight? Say around eight or so?”

August looked first at Maud, then at Krysteen, then back at Maud. The man obviously didn’t know what to say, and Maud assumed he would decline. But he didn’t.

“I guess it won’t hurt!” he said, shrugging.
